Belfast Tidal Flood Alleviation

Belfast Tidal Flood Alleviation Scheme is a vital £33 million infrastructure project designed to provide enhanced tidal flood protection for over 3,900 properties across the city. It accounts for climate change projections up to the year 2080 and incorporates features that allow for future adaptability.

 

The 8 km scheme runs from Stranmillis to Belfast Harbour Estate and is divided into five flood cells, featuring six flood defence types:

  • 5,200m reinforced concrete walls
  • 800m post and plank demountable barriers
  • 50m flood gates
  • 700m temporary demountable barriers
  • 1,100m glass flood walls
  • 180m structural embankments

Key Highlights:

  • 1,100m glass flood defence wall, is the longest in the UK.
  • Involved coordination with 156 utility providers and 76 landowners.
  • 700-metre Ravenhill Flood Cell featured:
    • Sheet pile cutoff, preventing water seepage
    • 25,000 tonnes dredging
    • 40,000 tonnes rockfill revetment construction
