Belfast Tidal Flood Alleviation

Belfast Tidal Flood Alleviation

The Belfast Tidal Flood Alleviation Scheme reduces the risk of flooding to Belfast City Centre from storm events up to 1:200 year and 2080 event.

Works follow the course of the River Lagan for 9km and extend from Stranmillis in South Belfast to the Herron Road in Belfast Harbour Estate. Works include a combination of in-situ reinforced concrete flood walls, glass walls and demountable barriers.

The project protects:

  • 1,103 residential
  • 430 non-residential properties

All these properties were at risk of flooding from tidal events.

A 150m in river section includes a rock armoured revetment structure and reinforced concrete flood wall.
